Since your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements, it’s not surprising that it’s also the part of your exterior that frequently suffers damage. However, what exactly causes roofs to fail?

Granule Loss

All roofs have a limited lifespan, although some roofing materials are known to outlast the very houses on which they’re installed. Naturally, prolonged exposure to the elements can drastically shorten the lifespan. And, as your roof nears the end of its lifespan, some warning signs will start to appear. In the case of asphalt shingles, the most commonly used roofing material in the country, some granule loss is expected.

These colored, ceramic granules protect the shingle from damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays as well as wear and tear. Keep in mind that some granule loss is to be expected over the course of the shingle’s lifetime, which is why manufacturers added more granules. Granule loss becomes a concern when it progresses to the point that bald patches start appearing on your roof.

Poor Material Quality

Substandard roofing materials is another common reason. Shingles of poor quality often have too much powdered stone filler, which can cause granules to fall off faster, shortening the roof’s lifespan.

Poor Ventilation

Roof ventilation is just as important as the quality of the shingles attached to it. Without adequate ventilation, moisture can accumulate inside your roof and cause the wood supporting the shingles to move more than usual, possibly affecting the integrity of the entire structure. Ensuring there are enough vents in your attic and scheduling routine roof maintenance work can help your roof last longer.

Shoddy Workmanship

It’s no secret that a new roof is a significant investment. So, in an attempt to save on costs, some homeowners mistakenly hire less-qualified contractors. However, hiring inexperienced contractors can cost you more in the long run, especially since shoddy installation work is one of the top reasons why roofs fail. If you’re looking for a contractor, here’s a vetting tip: check how many certifications a contractor has managed to acquire.
