A Quick Guide to Roof Discoloration

While it’s important to deal with roofing issues that can compromise the system’s life and performance, this doesn’t mean you should overlook those that affect its appearance. After all, your roofing system is a large and visible design element that helps your home make a bigger impression from the curb. Discoloration is one of the common problems you should watch out for on your system. But how exactly does it occur, and how do you deal with it?

What Causes Roof Stains?

There are many reasons discoloration can develop on the roof surface. But you can easily identify the cause based on the stain’s color and location. Green and black stains, for example, are caused by a species of algae called gloeocapsa magma. This appears on the roofing shingles as streaks or patches of slime that range from blue-green to dark black.

You can fix this issue by adding small sheets of copper or zinc to high points on the roof, above the stains. When it rains, the water will wash the metallic atoms over the discoloration, eliminating the algae and preventing it from coming back. Ask your trusted local roofer how you can effectively incorporate this specific solution to your roofing system.

Dealing with Other Roof Stains

Here are more of the roof stains to look for on your roof:

  1. Red or Brown Stains You’ll usually find these around the chimney, where rust and chimney soot accumulates. You can remove the stains by cleaning the area and treating it with oxalic acid, which prevents rust.
  2. White Stains This is more commonly found in slate roofing and is caused by efflorescence or salt stains from rainwater. Have your roof inspected thoroughly to determine the appropriate solution to the discoloration.
  3. Green and Brown Stains Some discoloration may appear in areas of the roof that are underneath trees. Sometimes, leaves, seeds and other loose debris can fall onto the system and start decomposing. Trim any overhanging branches to prevent this.
